Creating Value with
Your Pecan Promotions

Pecans add flavor, crunch and variety as a tasty snack or as a key ingredient in a recipe. The Georgia Pecan Commission recently conducted consumer research to find out what motivates consumers to buy pecans. When planning your pecan promotions, here’s a checklist based on what consumers are looking for:

  • Include a recipe with pecans in your feature advertising. Click here to access a wealth of recipes.
  • Add secondary displays next to relevant holiday items such as stuffing, turkey, yams and cranberries.
  • Run bi-monthly discount price promotions during the holiday season.

Pecans are used most often as an ingredient in baking desserts (86% of respondents). Also, a large percentage of respondents (61%) stated they eat pecans as a snack.

  • Create a “bake off” contest with your shoppers and ask them to bring in their favorite pecan baking recipes to win a prize such as a free shopping spree.
  • Cross merchandise pecans with pie crusts, muffin trays and other bakery items.
  • Promote pecans as a healthy snack item. Provide tips in your advertising for honey roasting pecans as a flavorful treat

Health benefits are a key purchase trigger. In fact, 76% of respondents said they would be more likely to purchase pecans once they become aware the health benefits.

Include these health statements on pecans in your advertising:

  • Provide essential nutrients like oleic acid, which can help lower "bad" LDL cholesterol levels
  • Rich in vitamin E, thiamin, magnesium, and copper
  • Good source of fiber
  • Antioxidants are substances found in foods that protect against cell damage and, studies have shown, can help fight diseases like heart disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cancer.
